The Manga

Release Information

Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon is one of CLAMP's older manga. It was published in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten. The first volume originally came out in Japan on March 3, 1992, and the second one followed on April 25, 1993. The second editions came out on March 29, 2001. Following CLAMP's early setup, it was written by Ohkawa Nanase (now known as Ohkawa Ageha), with Mokona Apapa (now just Mokona) as lead artist and Nekoi Mikku (now Nekoi Tsubaki) and Satsuki Igarashi (who changed her name's kanji/hiragana) as art assistants/designers/etc. CLAMP's Duklyon page can be found here (note: page is Japanese only).

Tokyopop picked up Duklyon in December of 2002, along with four other CLAMP titles (CLAMP School Detectives, The Man of Many Faces, Miyuki-Chan In Wonderland and Shirahime-syo: Snow Goddess Tales.) The first volume came out on September 16, 2003, and the second one on November 11, 2003. Tokyopop's Duklyon: CLAMP School Defenders page can be found here.

Duklyon was released in French as "Dukalyon" by Pika Édition, one of the larger French manga companies. The first volume came out on November 13, 2001, and the second volume came out on January 15, 2002. Their Dukalyon page can be found here (note: page is French only).

In Germany, Duklyon was released as "Justice Guards Duklyon" by EMA (Egmont Manga and Anime). Their Duklyon page can be found here.

The Italian version of Duklyon was released by Star Comics, whose website I find incredibly difficult to use. If anyone has any information about it, or any other editions, please let me know!

The Story

Duklyon is primarily a comedy manga, with the majority of the story being an obvious parody of sentai shows; that is, shows about superheroes, often in suits of armor or spandex, fighting aliens, undead or other creatures of evil intent. In the second volume, however, the romantic sidestory starts taking over, much to the annoyance of the two main characters.

According to the back of the second edition Japanese release... (Engrish intact!)

In a crisis, a team of justice appears from nowhere.
People call them Duklyon the Special School Guards.
To defend our peaceful life, they carry struggling rain or shine.
The enemy, a secret society of evil, is up to conquer the earth.
Go ahead and fight, our Duklyon! Save our earth!!

"Duklyon" is the campus defense team at the prestigious CLAMP School. The two fighting members, Kentarou and Takeshi, were handpicked by the Chief, a mysterious person who hides behind a fan and sunglasses, to defend the school against aliens and other such everyday threats. With the arrival of the Imonoyama Shoutengai (literally, "Imonoyama Shopping District"), a group of aliens intent on taking over the school and then Earth, Kentarou's and Takeshi's lives get very busy. It's not easy balancing school, personal time, and saving the world from aliens!

While Duklyon have their hands full with a variety of strange and silly aliens, a romance is blossoming between two unlikely people. Erii, the mallet-happy third member of Duklyon, seems to be falling for their friend Sukiyabashi. Much to the boys' surprise, he seems to be falling for her as well! However, all is not perfect--they both have their secrets...

Chapter Summaries

Each chapter has the Japanese title and the Tokyopop title, except for chapter five, which I think has a mistake in the Tokyopop version. The summaries for volume one are based off of the Japanese version, although I've updated them a bit with the Tokyopop titles and such. Volume two is based off of Tokyopop's translation, with occasional things from the Japanese version. If anyone has the titles from any other versions or anything else of interest along those lines, let me know!

Volume One
Volume One of Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon introduces the characters and sets up the basic plot. Rather long chapter overviews are below.

Volume Two
Volume Two of Gakuen Tokkei Duklyon continues the stories started in the first volume, although the focus shifts more towards the growing relationship between Sukiyabashi and Erii. The Duklyon boys aren't too happy about this, but they get the last word, so it all works out in the end. Once again, chapter overviews below.
